Floor and Ceiling
Think of AI like a massive office building. The 'Floor' is the 90-95% of people who work inside the offices using the tools provided to them, while the 'Ceiling' is the 5-10% of architects and engineers who design the building, set the rules, and make sure the structure stays standing.
The Floor and Ceiling model describes the bifurcation of AI labor: the Floor represents the 90-95% of the workforce utilizing AI-structured interfaces for operational tasks, while the Ceiling comprises the 5-10% of specialists—Architects, Orchestrators, and Trainers—responsible for the design, governance, and strategic capability of the underlying systems.
The dual-track model: Floor = mass literacy for those who work through AI-structured interfaces (3-6 months); Ceiling = the Architects, Orchestrators, and Trainers who design and govern AI (years).
