Surface
The surface is like the dashboard of a car: it gives you the buttons and screens you need to drive, but it doesn't make the car move. It is easy to learn and swap out for a new one, but without the engine underneath, it is just a useless plastic shell.
The surface encompasses the immediate tools, interfaces, and workflows we use daily to execute tasks. While these are quick to adopt and frequently updated, they are merely the visible layer of our work; they rely entirely on the underlying technical or organizational substrate to function.
The codifiable layer that sits on top of substrate: tools, interfaces, workflows, templates, credentials, the current generation of frameworks. Fast to learn and fast to replace, and useless without the substrate it rests on; the layer AI commoditises. (C4AIL, Whitepaper II §1.6.)
