The Maturity Scale (level register)
The Maturity Scale is a way to measure how advanced an AI system is, using two different sets of names for the same seven levels. One set is for technical experts, and the other is for business or marketing purposes, but they both point to the exact same level of capability.
The C4AIL Maturity Scale consists of seven rungs (L0-L6) that map technical capability to two distinct registers: the technical register for whitepapers and the customer register for marketing and HR. While the labels differ—for example, the technical 'Competent Integrator' is the customer 'Practitioner'—the underlying altitude remains identical across both, ensuring consistent assessment regardless of the audience.
C4AIL's 0-6 maturity scale runs in two registers, same altitude per rung. TECHNICAL register (whitepapers, canon, capability-routes): L0 Passenger, L1 Novice Experimenter, L2 Routine Operator, L3 Competent Integrator, L4 Strategic Modifier, L5 Expert Innovator, L6 Maestro. CUSTOMER register (marketing, certifications, the Kingston catalogue, the diagnostic UI - renamed 2026-07-22 for HR-department legibility): L0 Beginner (Explorer), L1 Foundational, L2 Associate, L3 Practitioner, L4 Principal, L5 Architect, L6 Maestro. Seat-name knock-on: because 'Practitioner' is now the customer L3 LEVEL, the customer name for the Build seat/route is 'Builder' (the technical register keeps the Build route as 'Practitioner'). The 0-6 scale is the Build/Practitioner route only; Operate (M1-4), Assure (G1-4) and Direct (L1-4) ride their own scales. Never invent a third name or move a rung's altitude.
